Hospital beds: An introduction

Most home medical beds serve two purposes; they make recovery faster and more tolerable for their users, and they also make it easier for caregivers to provide care that is needed. Even though many people use the term “hospital bed”, the truth is that these types of beds are used in multiple different types of settings, from assisted living, to in-home settings, among other health and recovery settings.

Typical features included in a medical bed include things like:

  • Adjustable height for the whole bed,
  • Adjustable height for h head and feet,
  • Side rails,
  • Remote controls to allow for easy operation

Medical beds may also be able to accommodate accessories that make their use more comfortable, such as under bed lights, over bed tables, and more. Beds are available in two main variants; used, and new. You can choose between either; they each have their benefits and drawbacks. We’ll give you as much information as we can to help you as you research to possibly buy a pre-owned hospital bed.

When is a medical bed required or useful?

Hospital beds are ideal or required when a person requires a bed that is adjustable. This level of care and adjustability provides assistance with moving, or when a person needs to be able to be better reached by a caregiver, or when it will be important to be able to put a patient in certain positions. When a person will needs to spend a lot of time in bed recovering, it is useful to be able to raise up into a seated position, or even to elevate the legs. This can be both for comfort (as in a change of position), and also for medical purposes that require elevation of. part of the body. This can be useful when a person has limited ability or strength to make some types of body raises or movements.

In addition to being adjustable, patient beds are designed with safety in mind. Ordinary beds can be elaborate, designed without any particular safety needs in mind. A medical bed, on the other hand, is designed with safety in mind. The first safety feature you may think of are railings. These ensure that a person does not fall out of the bed.

In short, a medical med is required when it will be beneficial or necessary to have an adjustable bed (to facilitate efficient care and recovery), and also when safety is a concern.

What should I know before I buy a used medical bed?

We will list a few things here; each of them almost deserves its own separate article, though. Before you buy a used hospital bed, think about things like:

  1. Delivery and set up: Does the company you are buying from offer delivery and set up, or will you be on your own when it comes to getting the bed in your space, set up, and ready to use?
  2. Condition of the bed: Be sure to inspect the bed for any signs of damage, such as cracks, rust, or worn-out, creaky mechanical parts. Ensure the bed frame, motor, and moving components are in good operating condition.
  3. Do you need manual, or electric? Consider whether a manual bed (operated by turning hand cranks) or an electric bed (operated via a remote, bed plugged in to the wall socket) better suits your recovery needs. Electric beds provide easier operating with smooth adjustments, but can be slightly more expensive. Also, determine how adjustable the bed is in terms of height, head, and foot positions. Fully adjustable beds are generally more versatile to meet specific recovery needs.
  4. Cleanliness and sanitation: In all cases, the bed should be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized. Ensure the seller has taken proper care in disinfecting all parts of the bed, seen and unseen. Even if the bed frame is pre-owned, you may want to purchase a new mattress to maintain hygiene and give you peace of mind.

These are the main areas that should cover off 90% of the things that could possibly go wrong when you buy a pre-owned or open box medical bed. We created a multi-point safety inspection system that addresses these issues, and more. Anything we sell has gone through this system, and functions equally to a new bed.  Make sure your hospital bed vendor can offer you the same guarantees

  2. Delivery, set up, and training: Our technicians will visit your location, and set up your bed in the desired spot. In addition, they will spend the necessary time with you, to ensure that you are properly trained on how to operate and maintain the equipment.
  3. Easy decision making and expert advice: Our goal is to ensure that you have the information and recommendations you need. We aren’t just selling beds; we are product experts that you can trust to make sure your equipment works the way it should, the first time.
  4. Get all the items you need in one place: Before you buy a bed on an online marketplace, ask yourself: Does the seller have EVERYTHING I need? Sometimes it’s not just about the bed. You’ll still sometimes want a convenient overbed table, as well as a brand new mattress, or an IV holder. We not only sell used beds, we have access to new accessories through our relationships with equipment manufacturers. You can get the perfect combination of used and new items that meets your needs perfectly.

Regardless of where you choose to buy a refurbished bed frame, as long as you can take the above points into consideration, you will be in a better position to come out ahead. Consider shopping with us to get the “like new” shopping experience with favourable pricing.

Can I get the Ontario Assistive Devices Program (ADP) to pay for a used bed?

This is the most question people ask when seeking a new

The ADP is a fantastic program that covers up to 75% of the cost of certain medical equipment, but they only provide financing for certain types of new equipment. Only a specific set of beds like shower beds can be ADP approved. The vast majority of hospital beds are not eligible for funding under the ADP. This is why access to quality used hospital beds (especially in a high cost of living area like Toronto/ the GTA) even more important.
